Project description

Fredriksberg is a large office and retail block built in four stages on Helsinki’s Sturenkatu street in Vallila. Four connected brick buildings form a seamless city block that frames the eastern edge of the historic Konepaja area. The Konepaja area has been listed as a nationally significant industrial and cultural environment.

The architecture of the new building is influenced by the industrial history of the area and acts as a link between the Konepaja area, built at the beginning of the 20th century, and the functionalist SOK building on the other side of Sturenkatu street, designed by architect Erkki Huttunen in 1934-38.

During the 2010s, VR’s former train depot has become a lively neighborhood for living, working, culture and entertainment. The Fredriksberg block contains versatile office and business premises, facilities for children’s day care and public services, and e.g. MTV’s news studios. There are numerous restaurants and bars on the street level of the block. The meandering building mass creates partially covered outdoor spaces on both the Sturenkatu and Konepaja sides. On the top floor of the building, there is a terrace restaurant with an open view to the Konepaja area.

Fredriksberg has been granted a BREEAM Excellence environmental certificate.

The block was completed in four stages between 2018 and 2022 and its total area is 46,000 m².
